Back to ’20s

Today the hat, despite several periods of disuse, is slowly returning to the fore because it’s a touch of individuality, far from its initial tradition, becoming less functional and more real fashion, ultimate accessory, almost an extension of the dress, thanks to the changing trends proposed by the designers.

It ‘s funny to see that in some cultures, almost the British one, the hat has never experienced declines and has always been an essential clothing accessory.
In Italy instead, the true golden age for the hat were the ’20s, when the exports throughout the world of hats were around 23 million and a half of male models. A very important production for our country that has seen its decline since the mid ’50s. Man’s hat, the first symbol of elegance and essential accessory for a total look, it was gradually forgotten.

But I want to remember the beautiful, elegant and always chic shapes of hats of the ’20s and ’30s with some vintage illustrations and photos.

Indietro agli anni ’20

Marc Jacobs in Wonderland

The autumn-winter 2012/2013 collection by Marc Jacobs presented at the New York Fashion Week 2012, seems like something out of the movie “Alice in Wonderland”: the atmosphere is inspired by a fairy tale, the models are transformed into modern witches, wrapped in long coats and skirts, big scarves, crystals and feathers embellished dresses, shiny shoes eighteenth century style. But the hallmark of this collection is definitely the hats, fur hats, solid or striped, but strictly oversized, big up to exaggeration, eccentric, baroque. Jacobs makes this accessory a true monument: you can only catch a glimpse of models’s faces due to the wide brims, alternating and disappearing in a polar and fairytale setting in which hats reign protagonists.

Akio Hirata hats exhibition in Tokyo

Born in 1925, Hirata immersed himself in hat design at the tender age of 14. In 1962 he travelled to Paris to serve as apprentice to Jean Barthet, one of France’s most prominent milliners with a clientele that included Grace Kelly and Sophia Loren. Upon returning to Japan he established Haute Mode Hirata, and went on to design hats for the likes of Issey Miyake, Comme des Garçons and Yohji Yamamoto. In response to a request from Rei Kawakubo (Comme des Garçons) to design a hat that looks like “it had been left unused in someone’s dresser,” Hirata once famously created a hat adorned with crushed flowers. After over seventy years of work Akio Hirata has earned a place in the narrowest Olympus of hats designers, and now Tokyo celebrates the originality, innovation and craftsmanship of his work. The layout design of Fumihiko Maki’s Spiral Building in Tokyo is due to another great Japanese designer, Oki Sato of Nendo, which has created for the occasion, a stretch of about 3,000 white hats, suspended like a vortex at different height levels, on which Hirata ‘s creations get away for color and morphological differences. More newsworthy is the fact that just a hundred of these 3,000 hats was designed and built by master Hirata. And the others? Simple, they’re ghost-hats of Smash, a nonwoven polyester fabric developed by Asahi Kasei textile firm, the antithesis of handmade hats by Hirata. The hats are suspended from the ceiling with transparent nylon thread at different heights to evoke the impression of hats in the wind. Visitors are invited to wander freely through this highly theatrical setting, according to an unconventional and not driven walk, in order to capture in depth the random generation process, crossed by a strong contingent and emotional inspiration element that has allowed the designer to become one of the most acclaimed actors of the global fashion scene.

Royal Ascot has celebrated 300 years

Royal Ascot has celebrated its 300th anniversary in 2011 and James Sherwood has documented three centuries of Ascot style. Time to don your hat and lengthen your hemlines; Royal Ascot, which opens tomorrow, is celebrating its 300th anniversary this year. To celebrate this landmark year for the racing event, James Sherwood, a well-known member of the Royal Ascot fashion team, has written a history of Ascot style, from when the course was founded by Queen Anne in 1711, until the present day, in a celebration of an event that has always had fashion close to its heart. With forewords by the Duke of Devonshire and designer, Amanda Wakeley, Fashion at Royal Ascot: Three Centuries of Thoroughbred Style (eThames&Hudson), illustrates in 500 pages the most eccentric and original creations, every Royal Enclosure trend throughout the years, with stunning photographs from the official archives. From Queen Anne’s crinolines and lace cuffs, to the fascinators and below-the-knee frocks favoured by race-goers today, it doubles as a fascinating commentary of high fashion over the past three centuries. The British Fashion Council (BFC) has further strengthened links with Ascot. Apart from introducing former-NEWGEN designer Todd Lynn to the Royal Ascot fashion show, which takes place in the Bessborough restaurant each day, they have arranged to import a ‘Headonism’ installation as well. Backed by the leading milliner, Stephen Jones, this display will feature creations by his four favourite emerging hat talents, Noel Stewart, Piers Atkinson, Soren Bach and J Smith Esquire. As well as Todd Lynn, creations by British designers Amanda Wakeley, Vivienne Westwood, Julien MacDonald and milliner, Stephen Jones will be gracing the catwalk at the annual fashion show.

Alexis Mabille

He is a young fashion talent. Class 1978, thirty-four years. It is said that even when he was a child he used to playing with needle, thread and scraps of cloth. Alexis Mabille made his debut in the Paris fashion by launching an idea that he wants to call “unisex couture”: his designs aren’t unisex, but in the sense that the philosophy behind the clothes is the same, both for men and for women. And it’s Couture. After working as first assistant of Hedi Slimane for Dior Homme jewelry collection, when Slimane was the head of the male line of Dior, Alexis Mabille has become popular due to its characteristic node, a versatile accessory that can change depending on requirements, in detail on one male suit or female dress. In the Haute Couture collection for the season S / S 2012, Mabille “unties the knot”: he transforms it into a giant flower that becomes ornament for her to show off the head, on a hat, but also on a straight shift dress, on a suit, on a cocktail dress and even on an evening gown. He choses the hat as a leitmotif of his whole line, and revisits the classic wardrobe of Parisian women: the little black dress, which now is colored with bright tones, with or without sleeves, round neckline or V; the yellowand polish pantsuit to wear with lace blouse and satin decorations and the inevitable evening dress, which Mabille interprets, transforming some elegant lingerie into couture dresses. Here then stiff corsets on the catwalk, from which start layers of chiffon that form a trail; the long chiffon nude look, négligé style, and the red with ruffles along the shoulder that spiral around the body. The catwalk closes with a satin metallic wedding dress in bright gold.

A quote from Marcel Proust—”It is only women who do not know how to dress that are afraid of colors”—preceded a brief statement from Alexis Mabille about “the science of color” and energy as therapy. His show certainly promoted a fearless approach to color blocking. Each outfit was monochrome, from brightest red to palest blue, and each model’s face was painted the same shade as the enormous tissue flower mounted on her head.

Alexis Mabille

È un giovane talento della moda. Classe 1978, trentaquattro anni appena compiuti.

Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones

Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones—a collaboration between the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and Stephen Jones, the world’s foremost hat designer—is at the Bard Graduate Center (BGC) in New York City from September 15, 2011 to April 15, 2012. It is the first venue in this country. The exhibition, which had over 100,000 visitors at the V&A, displays more than 250 hats chosen with the expert eye of the master milliner.

On display are hats ranging from a twelfth-century Egyptian fez to a 1950s Balenciaga hat and couture creations by Jones and his contemporaries. To show the universal appeal of wearing hats, Jones has chosen a wide variety of styles such as motorcycle helmets, turbans, berets, and a child’s plastic tiara. There also are hats worn by celebrities such as Madonna, Brad Pitt and Keira Knightley. For the special exhibition at the BGC, the curators have arranged for loans particularly relevant to the United States, including Babe Ruth’s baseball cap, Mouseketeer ears, Estee Lauder’s turban, Halston bunny ears worn by Candace Bergen to Truman Capote’s Black & White Ball, and the top hat worn by President Franklin Roosevelt to his fourth inauguration. There is also a display of work by contemporary New York milliners: Ellen Christine, Rod Keenan, Eugenia Kim, Lola, Jennifer Ouellette, Albertus Swanepoel, and Patricia Underwood.

Stephen Jones said: “I was honored when the V&A asked me to curate an exhibition about hats. I had so much fun finding unique head decoration in the most interesting of places. This exhibition draws on millinery collections world-wide and is truly an eclectic and exciting anthology of hats from the last millennium to the present day.”

Stephen Jones spearheaded the fashionable revival of British millinery in the early 1980s. Using unusual materials and daring designs, his exquisitely crafted hats have pushed the boundaries of hat design forward for more than three decades. Jones has collaborated with many leading fashion designers including Marc Jacobs, Comme des Garçons, and Christian Dior. He has worked with many celebrity clients including Diana, Princess of Wales, Dita von Teese, Mick Jagger, and Rihanna, and has made hats for the filmsAtonement, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Coco avant Chanel, and W.E.

The exhibition is divided into several sections that reveal the practice of creating hats, how they are worn, by whom, and how they are presented to the client.

Inspiration, the first section, looks at how common themes such as exoticism, modernism, and the natural world have inspired countless designers. It shows historic and contemporary interpretations of hat types such as the tricorn, bowler, baseball cap, bonnet, skullcap, and many more.

Creation shows how hats are made and the traditions, innovations, and practices at the heart of millinery. This area is set up like a milliner’s workroom, with patterns, sketches, materials, and millinery blocks.

The Salon reflects the milliner’s public showcase, featuring spectacular hats that reveal the craft at its sartorial best. On display are designs by Philip Treacy, Bill Cunningham, Mr. John, Lily Daché, Mitza Bricard for Christian Dior, Misa Harada for Yohji Yamamoto, and Chanel.

In The Client, visitors can see hats worn by famous clients including Sarah Jessica Parker, Mick Jagger, Brad Pitt, Cecil Beaton, members of the British royal family, and avid collectors such as Isabella Blow and Italian Vogue’s Anna Piaggi. Also on display will be iconic headwear such as Marlene Dietrich’s beret and Andy Warhol’s wig.

The exhibition also features a selection of archive film footage plus a film showing a couture hat being made in Jones’ atelier.

Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones

All my “why”

Why have I decided to open this blog? Because I believe that “online-diary” is personal, but shared space, where I can express myself, sharing, talking with people who have passion for fashion and hats.
Why an hats’ blog? Because I think that hat is not just a “headdress”: it is an important element, through which you can express your personality, your mood as it is a real vehicle of communication.
Why today we don’t wear a hat anymore? That’s what I ask myself and what I would ask you too. Until ’50s hat was not considered an accessory, but it was an integral part of clothing, custom that has been lost. In some cultures (English, for example) this custom is still strong.

So, why Italians (country where I come from) don’t wear hats anymore?

Because hat is not fashion anymore?

Because it is unnecessary?

Maybe because we don’t have any “time”?

Or just because we have become less expressive?

Why this passion for hats? You’ll find out soon …

I miei “perché”

O solamente perché siamo diventati meno espressivi?

Perché questa mia passione per il cappello? Lo scoprirete prossimamente…
