Queen Elizabeth and her hats

It is curious to see how in some cultures, most in the British one, the hat has never experienced periods of decline and always has been an essential clothing accessory, sometimes even obligatory.

In British tradition, the hat is very important: Queen Elizabeth never shows herself to her subjects bare-headed and it is still considered a lack of courtesy and style, to get in front of her without a hat, because the closeness of the queen, makes the hat required.

“Hats and Handbags: Accessories from Royal Wardrobe” is the title of the exhibition on royal hats and handbags, organized in 2003 at Kensington Palace. There were more than seventy pieces belonged to the Queen since she was a child and selected one by one from the same Elizabeth and court’s tailors, along with a selection of handbags that accompanied the same hats, unforgettable, unique, unique and eccentric.

Not only Queen Elizabeth likes to cover her head with style. In the United Kingdom it is like a national passion. ”Just go to any marriage, even the simplest, to realize that for the typical British woman, looking for the perfect hat and wear it is just a small obsession” said Coulson Clare, reporter for the Daily Telegraph and author of a book on British traditions and customs. ”A hat can enhance a simple and not particularly handsome dress, it’s an accessory that gives great satisfaction. In this country full of shy and reserved people, it is an outburst of creativity and character and our trump card, because we are certainly more attracted by a hat than by a jewel. ”

La regina Elisabetta e i suoi cappelli

È curioso vedere come in alcune culture, prima fra tutte quella inglese, il cappello non ha mai conosciuto declini ed è sempre stato un accessorio essenziale, se non obbligatorio, d’abbigliamento.

Nella tradizione britannica, il copricapo è molto importante: la regina Elisabetta non si mostra mai ai sudditi a testa nuda ed è considerata tuttora una mancanza di cortesia, e di stile, arrivare senza cappello davanti a lei, la vicinanza della sovrana, in pratica, rende il cappello obbligatorio.

“Cappelli e Borse: Accessori dal Guardaroba Reale” è il titolo della mostra organizzata nel 2003 a Kensington Palace sui cappelli e le borsette reali,  oltre settanta pezzi appartenuti alla Regina fin da quando era bambina e scelti uno per uno dalla stessa Elisabetta e dai sarti di corte, insieme ad una selezione di borsette che accompagnavano gli stessi cappelli, indimenticabili, unici, irripetibili ed eccentrici.

E non solo alla regina Elisabetta piace coprirsi il capo con stile. Nel Regno Unito è un po’ una passione nazionale. «Basta andare a qualsiasi matrimonio, anche il più semplice, per rendersi conto che per l’inglese tipica cercare e indossare un cappello particolarmente indicato è una piccola mania», ha sottolineato Clare Coulson, giornalista del Daily Telegraph e autrice di un libro su tradizioni e usanze britanniche. «Un cappello può valorizzare un abito semplice e non particolarmente bello, è un accessorio che dà grandi soddisfazioni. In questo Paese pieno di gente timida e riservata è uno sfogo di creatività e carattere, e la nostra carta vincente, notiamo certamente di più un cappello che un gioiello».
